What is pelvic floor PT?
A physical therapy specialty focusing on the pelvic region, such as...
- Pain conditions (pelvic pain, abdominal pain, SI pain, tailbone pain, low back pain, hip pain)
- Bladder conditions (chronic UTIs, Interstitial Cystitis (IC), urinary incontinence, urgency/frequency)
- Bowel conditions (IBS/IBD, fecal incontinence, urgency/frequency, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, bloating)
- Sexual dysfunction (pain with intercourse, pain with orgasm, difficulty with orgasm, vaginismus)
- Pelvic organ prolapse (often experienced as heaviness, bulging, or pressure at the vaginal opening)
- Other conditions such as endometriosis, PCOS, pain with menstruation, irregular cycles, infertility, perimenopause, and menopausal changes
Who can benefit from pelvic floor PT?
Pelvic floor physical therapy can be extremely beneficial...
- To optimize fertility
- Prenatal to help prepare your body for childbirth
- Postpartum to help your body recover more quickly and optimally
- Postoperative hysterectomy, prolapse repair, vulvectomy, hemorrhoidectomy, rectal fissure repair, urinary/fecal incontinence surgery, gender-affirming surgery, or any abdominal surgery such as gallbladder removal or post caesarean section
- For all ages and genders!
What to expect in pelvic floor PT?
Ideally, your PT will take a thorough history and perform a full body physical exam, including assessing your pelvic floor muscles internally with your consent, to help figure out why you are having your symptoms.
Treatment may include:
- Exercise for full body mobility and strengthening
- Functional training, such as lifting techniques
- Breathwork and coordination training
- Manual therapy like soft tissue massage, myofascial release, scar tissue release, dry needling, and trigger point release
- Education about your condition, including optimal fluid/fiber intake, sleep hygiene, postural training, pain & stress reduction, toiletting mechanics
- KT taping
- Biofeedback
How Do I Find a Good Pelvic Floor PT?
- Research therapists in your area who look like a good fit for you.
- Once you find someone, contact them to ask questions you may have.
- Ideally, they do internal manual therapy and have experience treating the condition you are seeking care for. Sometimes, you'll need to go out-of-network to find a pelvic floor PT who’s a good fit.
- If you find someone who’s ultimately not a good fit for you, don’t give up!
- Keep trying until you find someone you trust and feel comfortable with.
